A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

How one guest described Sox Place

Hey friends,

Recently we asked a guest named “Mike” a simple question:

“What does Sox Place mean to you?”

He didn’t give a long speech. He just started listing words.

Family.
Memories.
Loyalty.
Integrity.
Motivation.

Then he explained what he meant.

“Mike” said some mornings you wake up and nothing is going right. Everything feels heavy. But he knows if he comes through the doors of Sox Place, something positive can still happen that day.

Then he said something that stuck with us.

That’s the difference.

A handout is temporary.
A hand up means someone believes you’re capable of getting back on your feet.

For more than 23 years, Sox Place has been that kind of place for street-connected youth and young adults in Denver. We offer meals, showers, clean clothes, and a safe place to sit down—but what we’re really offering is consistency, dignity, and hope.

Young people like “Mike” walk through our doors every week looking for that kind of support.

And because of people like you, we’re able to keep offering it.

Thank you for helping us continue this work—one life, one story, one hand up at a time.

With gratitude,

Jordan Robinson
Executive Director, Sox Place
